* Watch brief clip on the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty
* Read "An Immigrant's Statue" (Materials below)
* Answer questions regarding the Statue of Liberty (Questions below)
* Begin working on Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 study guide

1) How did the Statue of Liberty become a symbol of immigration?

2) How do you think immigrants felt as they saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time?

3) Part of the poem under the Statue of Liberty reads:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

What do you think this poem means? Translate it in your own words.  (Use a dictionary to look up words you don’t know.)

5) What happened in the twentieth century that caused millions of Europeans to come to America through Ellis Island?

6) What did Franklin Delano Roosevelt say about immigration in his speech for the 50th anniversary speech of the Statue of Liberty?

7) What is Americanization? What are some examples?

8)  What are some negative connections between the Statue of Liberty and immigration?

9) You have read about immigration to the United States in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.  You were presented with both positive and negative views of immigration. How have these views changed in today’s world?  How are they the same?

10) If you had to create a statue to welcome new immigrants to America, what would it look like? How does your statue represent America’s principles and attitudes toward immigrants?  You may draw it or describe it.
